The Code of Conduct Tribunal has fixed November 9 for the arraignment of a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsdey Orubebe, on a four-count charge bordering on breach of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act.
Mr. Orubebe almost derailed the 2015 presidential election when he disrupted the announcement of results after he accused the former INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega, of bias.
The Code of Conduct Tribunal has now served Mr. Orubebe a summon directing him to appear before it to face corruption charges.
A statement by the spokesperson of the Tribunal, Ibraheem Al-hassan, on Friday, said the charges were filed on October 8, 2015 by Peter Danladi of Code of Conduct Bureau, on behalf of the Attorney General of the Federation.

A Russian airliner carrying 217 passengers and seven crew members has crashed in central Sinai, the office of Egypt’s prime minister has confirmed to the BBC.
The Airbus A-321 took off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, on its way to the Russian city of St Petersburg.
Egyptian media reports said the wreckage of the plane had already been found and rescuers in more than 20 ambulances have been sent to the scene.
Most of the passengers are believed to be Russian tourists.
Initially, the plane was thought to have disappeared over Cyprus. But the office of Egyptian Prime Minister Sharif Ismail confirmed in a statement that a “Russian civilian plane… crashed in the central Sinai”.
The Egyptian government has since formed a crisis committee to deal with the crash.
The Russian aviation authority, Rosaviatsiya, said in a statement that flight 7K 9268 left Sharm el-Sheikh at 06:51 Moscow time (03:51 GMT) and had been due into St Petersburg’s Pulkovo airport at 12:10.
The authority added that the aircraft failed to make scheduled contact with Cyprus air traffic control 23 minutes after take-off.
A centre to help relatives of the passengers has been set up at Pulkovo airport in Russia, Tass news agency quoted St Petersburg city officials as saying.
The BBC’s Orla Guerin in Cairo said there will be speculation about militant involvement in the incident.
Sinai is a hotbed of Islamist militant with an ISIS affiliated group engage in constant battle with Egyptian security forces.
A source said the aircraft was flying at an altitude where it could not have been struck by something from the ground.
However, the cause of the crash could also be mechanical, analysts say.

Chelsea Vs Liverpool: Who Takes the Victory?

                       Photo: Channels TV

Chelsea must beat Liverpool this Saturday or the dynasty that Jose Mourinho was talking about     at Stamford Bridge will continue to be a dream as his continued stay as manager may become untenable.
Statistics and history are not able to help Jose Mourinho and his Chelsea team at the moment – what they really need is a little luck. Because whether they are playing well or otherwise, the ball just seems unable to enter the opponent’s goal. The millimetres against West Ham, balls cleared on the line and penalty missed by the team’s most proficient penalty taker, all paint a particularly despondent picture. Their clash with Liverpool  today (31 OCtober) would normally point in just one direction – a win, because Liverpool have not beaten Chelsea in their last five confrontations but the Kop now have Jurgen Klopp, who got his first win as Liverpool manager against Bournemouth in the Capital One Cup on Thursday. Will the Klopp of the Kop ensure that Mourinho continues to feel the blues?

The Governor of Cross River Suspends Permanent Secretary for Banning Prayers in Schools

                          Governor Ben Ayade
                          Governor Ben Ayade

The Cross River Government has suspended indefinitely, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Anne Odey, for “flouting civil service rules”, amid a controversy over ban of morning and afternoon prayer sessions in schools.
Jude Ngaji, the State Security Adviser to Gov, Ben Ayade, disclosed this on Friday in Calabar while speaking to journalists.
Mrs. Odey in a statement had directed all private and public primary and secondary schools in the state to stop morning and afternoon devotion forthwith.
According to her, the directives came from the Commissioner of Police, Henry Fadairo, in view of the security challenges facing the nation.
On Wednesday, the state Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Archbishop Joseph Ukpo, in a statement, called on the state government to immediately withdraw such directive.
The CAN leader said that such directive negated freedom of worship.
“This directive to suspend morning devotion will negatively affect the moral upbringing of our children who are the future leaders of this country,’’ the statement stated.
Mr. Ngaji said the governor was not aware of such directive, neither did the permanent secretary pass such information through the governor or through his office for approval.
“The governor has directed that the permanent secretary be suspended indefinitely while the ban on suspension of devotion has been lifted immediately.
“It is true that police got intelligence information that Boko Haram is planning to bomb schools during morning devotion and therefore directed authorities in the ministry of education to act fast.
“But the permanent secretary did not bother to refer to the governor or call for stakeholders’ meeting to that effect.
“So, the governor feels pained that the permanent secretary got such sensitive information without seeking for his advice and went ahead to issue directive suspending morning devotions in schools,” he said.
According to him, it would be contradictory to say that the governor who not only believes in God, but a strong catholic, would turn around to do otherwise.
He appealed to religious leaders to discountenance such instructions as the state government was committed to inculcating good moral lessons in pupils and students in schools.
Reacting, John Eluu, the state police public relations officer, said that the commissioner had approved a “10 minute” time duration for morning and afternoon devotions.
“The commissioner of police told us during our briefing today that he has approved 10 minutes each for morning and afternoon devotion in both public and private schools in the state,” he said.

Stop whining, rebrand or go down, APC tells PDP

                       Lai Mohammed

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has dismissed a communique issued by the Peoples Democratic Party’s national caucus on the political developments in the nation, saying it is a rehash of the party’s “infantile whining” which will not save it from going down unless it rebrands most urgently.
”It is time for the PDP to take a long, hard look at itself in the mirror and change everything that is ugly about the party, instead of wasting its energy and time on irrelevancies,” the party said in a statement issued in Lagos on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed.
It said the PDP cannot continue to do things in its “trademark old, crooked ways and expect a different result”.
”The PDP just doesn’t get it, despite being the architect of its own fall from power. The days of winning elections with the aid of slush funds, brigandage, deceit and rigging are gone forever, hence the PDP must return to the drawing board to fashion out decent and empirical ways of repackaging and selling itself to Nigerians, just like the opposition did when they decided to come together,” APC said.
The party said the PDP’s “ceaseless and ill-advised” attack on the judiciary, now its favourite whipping boy, the endless put-down of government agencies and the demonization of everyone but itself, will fetch the party nothing but political grief.
”Instead of a blanket and unsubstantiated accusation against the judiciary over the election petition tribunal rulings in Rivers and Akwa Ibom, the PDP would have shown itself to be a serious party if it had provided statistics on how many of the cases filed at the various election petition tribunals nationwide, after the 2015 elections, have so far been decided in favour of the PDP and the APC, so that Nigerians can see whether the PDP has not won any single petition or whether all the cases have been won by the APC.
”The PDP has forgotten that the same judiciary that it is wilfully castigating today had decided many election petitions in favour of the party and against the APC, whether at the Governorship, National Assembly or State Assembly levels, and the ruling party has not opted to bring the whole house crashing down on everyone just because of that.
”Going down the memory lane, when the PDP took itself to court in 2007 over the Governorship election in Rivers, the same judiciary that has now become an apparition to the PDP awarded the Governorship to a candidate who never even featured on the ballot because the party crookedly substituted his name. Then, the PDP did not see the judiciary as being used by the then PDP Administration, neither did the opposition castigate the judiciary,” it said.
APC admonished the PDP to stop complaining and engage in strategic thinking that could propel the party forward, rather than continue to be nostalgic about its past, which is neither dignifying nor enlivening.
”The 16 years of the PDP – which the party has continued to shamelessly celebrate – are nothing to celebrate, either for the impunity that characterized the party’s governance, the massive looting of the national treasury that is still being assessed or the bastardization of all the values that the nation holds dear.
“Thankfully, President Muhammadu Buhari has brought sanity to governance even as the PDP has continued to try to distract him with their endless wailing.
”Our parting word for the PDP: Stop throwing juvenile tantrums against everyone, especially the judiciary. Stop wasting your energy on frivolous accusations. Learn how to communicate your thoughts to Nigerians in a more civilized way and put your shoulder to the wheel if you want to reincarnate as a force to be reckoned with in our country’s political firmament,” APC said.

Worshippers defy blast, turn out en masse at Yola Mosques

Damaturu-Bomb-Blast-Scene

Muslim worshippers on Friday defied last week’s bombing that killed over 30 people to attend prayers at the Jambutu Central Mosque.
Worshippers turned out en masse at the mosque for the Jumaát prayers and the seven day prayer in honour of those people killed in the blast.
The Chief Imam of the mosque, Sheikh Muhammad Awwal Ibn Usmna, led prayers at the mosque.
In his sermon, the Chief Imam of the mosque, who commiserated with families of those who lost their lives, told the worshippers to defy fears and threats of attacks saying they were meant, “to stop us worshipping, and by Allah’s grace, they will not succeed. We should continue to remain steadfast and security conscious.
“You have demonstrated resilience and believe in the religion, because in spite of last Friday bomb blast outside this mosque during which many lives, were lost I can see an unprecedented turn out of worshippers at the mosque.
A worshipper, Abubakar Ahmad, after observing the prayers said he was not apprehensive. “I felt at home while praying to Allah to expose those behind the attack on our mosque and several other attacks on innocent Nigerians.
“I have the belief that very soon, their end will come since they have brought the unholy war to the very domain of Allah. All Muslim faithful who gathered here today did so without fear or fervour because we believe that Allah is with us and will continue to guide and protect us,” he said.
Also corroborating, Yusuf Osama, an official of the first Aid group of Jama’atul Izalatul Bid’ah Wa iqamatus Sunnah, said he decided to worship at the mosque in order to express his grievances over the tragic loss of his loved ones, and to send a message to the perpetrators of the attack that they cannot stop him from practicing Islam.
He said police officers and members of religious aid groups were at strategic positions conducting searches at the single entrance road to the mosques that was left open during the prayers.
In the meantime, heavy security presence was witnessed around the central mosque, just as other mosques within the metropolis were heavily guarded and people going in and out thoroughly frisked. Vehicles were not allowed to park close to the mosques, just as human traffic was strictly monitored as worshippers were not allowed to gain entrance inside the mosques with objects.
At the Police barrack Jumma’at mosque where government officials including the speaker of the state Assembly, Kabiru Mijinyawa, worship, scanners and bomb detectives were used utilised.
The Chief Imam of the mosque, Ahmad Suleiman, admonished worshippers to attend prayers early.
He said “we implore everyone to be security conscious, there will be time for coming to pray, hence the reason for designing time frame. That is by 2:00 p.m, no more entrance to the mosque because we will not just fold our hands to see innocent people being killed by miscreants and devil minded individuals,” said the Chief Imam of the mosque”.

CBN governor replies Emir Sanusi, says no further devaluation of Naira

CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele
CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, will not devalue the naira again, the governor of the bank, Godwin Emefiele, said Friday, a day after Vice President Yemi Osinbajo gave similar commitment.
Mr. Emefiele told journalists that the last devaluation took place in February and would remain so for now.
“There has been a lot of talk on whether or not we want to depreciate our currency again.
“The truth is that we had adjusted the currency by depreciating it from N155 to N197 in February this year.
“There is no intention to depreciate or adjust the currency any longer,” he said.
There had been calls for the devaluation of naira in the face of economic crunch.
The International Monetary Fund and a former CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido, recently called for the depreciation of the currency.
Mr. Osinbajo said on Thursday that the government will not shift its stance.
According to Mr. Emefiele, “the President has been very clear on this; the Vice President has been very clear on this and let me further reiterate our position at the CBN that we are not considering any further depreciation of the currency”.
He said the focus of the bank was how to deepen the foreign exchange market to make it viable.
“What we are trying to concentrate on right now is how to improve and deepen the foreign exchange market by improving supply of foreign exchange into the market.
“And to do so, we are trying to encourage people to export and earn your export proceeds and use your export proceeds to import whatever you need to import.
“We are also concentrating on how to reduce the import of items that we can produce in the country today,” he said.
Mr. Emefiele said soon the CBN would be launching a campaign called PAVE, which means “Produce locally, Add Value and Export your product and earn your foreign exchange for your imports”.
He said the campaign was the only way producers could support the efforts of CBN in intervening and providing foreign exchange in the market to meet the import needs of the people.
“It is very clear, what we need to do is reduce our propensity to import but we will not depreciate our currency. For now we will not,” he said.
On the list of items in the import prohibition list, he said had no power to ban the importation of any item.
“What we have done is to exclude certain items that are imported into the country from obtaining foreign exchange from the Nigerian foreign exchange market.
“Yes, it is also true we held a stakeholders’ meeting with the organized private sector and prominent and leading private sector stakeholder were at that meeting.
“The purpose was to engage the private sector to make the private sector understand that government realizes that they are engine of growth.
“We also used the opportunity to explain to them the basis and purpose of those policies that we have introduced.
“At the end of that meeting they were very happy, they saw our position and indeed at the end of that meeting some of them provided us with the names of some items that should be included in the list that should be excluded from foreign exchange.
“And I must confess that at this stage, given the determination of some of the organized sectors to say that yes, they produce these items and that we should exclude those items from foreign exchange, we are reviewing that list.
“We may in due course include more items, products that can be produced in Nigeria, in the list of items that will be excluded from foreign exchange in the Nigerian foreign exchange market.’’

Crisis rocks Nigeria Customs Service as all deputy comptroller-generals resign

In what appears a protest against the leadership style of the newly appointed Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Hameed Ali, all five Deputy Comptroller-Generals of the Nigerian Customs have resigned.

Resignation letter of Nigeria's deputy comptroller-generals
Resignation letter of Nigeria’s deputy comptroller-generals

In an unprecedented move in the history of the customs service in the country, the five DCGs jointly announced their resignation in a terse letter dated October 29, 2015 titled “Voluntary Retirement” addressed to the Chairman of the Customs Board.
“We the underlisted officers currently on the rank of Deputy Comptroller-General met today, 29 October 2015 and unanimously agreed to voluntarily retire from the service of the Nigerian Customs Service having risen to the privileged rank of Deputy Comptroller-General.
We need to thank the President for giving is the opportunity to serve our great nation, Nigeria.
The letter was signed by Atte, A.J with service number 31441; Musa T.A, 31454; Mera I.M, 37595; Nwosu A.C, 34421; Adewuyi A.A, 30727.
Though they gave no reason for their resignation, it is believed that the DCG unanimously quit service following the no-nonsense leadership style of Mr Ali, a retired army Colonel, known for his anti-corruption stance.
The Nigeria customs is believed to be one of the most endemically corrupt institutions in the country and Mr. Ali was recalled from retirement by President Muhammadu Buhari to help sanitise the agency.
The spokesperson of the customs service, Wale Adeniyi, could not be reached for comments as at the time of publishing this story.
Customs' deputy comptroller generals resign

However, a source close to him said he would issue a statement on the development on Friday (today).
Mr. Ali has been talking tough since he assumed duties as head of revenue agency in September.
On his second day at work, he read the Riot Act to officers and men, vowing to jail anyone who indulges in corruption or any other unethical practices.
The Nation newspaper quoted him as saying at a meeting with top officers, ”
“Since I took over yesterday (Thursday), I have been receiving briefing notes to enhance my understanding of the Nigeria Customs Service. I have articulated some ideas to start with, and I have found it necessary to share these ideas with you. These ideas shall be the guiding principle and platform for a smooth takeoff.
“First and foremost, it is important that we know where we are going. We can start by ensuring that we pick up the mantle of Mr. President’s policy thrust. Therefore, in conjunction with you, moving with you and fighting with you we will fight corruption and restore discipline through attitudinal orientation for effective service delivery.
“However, I must stress this for emphasis. I will not tolerate indiscipline. I will not tolerate corruption. I have zero tolerance for corruption.
“Considering my military background, I believe punishment must be punitive for others to see it as a deterrent. Therefore, as an officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, if you are caught involved in corruption, I am not only going to dismiss you, I will make sure I prosecute and jail you. That is basic!”

APC hails confirmation of ministers by Senate

Lai-Mohammed

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has said the confirmation of all the ministerial nominees by the Senate, despite some misgivings by the opposition, has shown clearly that there is no longer any division within the APC family.
”The cohesion and unity exhibited by the APC Senators on Thursday have shown that our legislators are ready to work with the executive and the party to ensure that the the agenda of the party is implemented for the benefit of all Nigerians,” the party said in a statement issued in Lagos on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed.
”We commend all our members and leaders in the Senate and indeed the leadership of the APC for this show of unity,” it said.
The APC said democracy was clearly at work in the Senate on Thursday, despite the decision of the opposition PDP Senators to stage a walk-out over the confirmation of former Governor Chibuike Amaechi.
”It is part of democracy that while the minority can have their say, the majority will have their way. Therefore, the decision of the PDP Senators to walk out is nothing but democracy in action,” the party said.
It enjoined the entire National Assembly to continue to work with the executive arm of government for the overall interest of Nigeria and its people.
”With the stage now set for the federal cabinet to be in place, we implore all Nigerians, irrespective of their party affiliation, to support President Muhammadu Buhari in his onerous task of making Nigeria great again,” APC said

Commotion as Senate confirms the Ministerial Nomination of Rotimi Amaechi

Rotimi-Amaechi
Today’s plenary session at the senate was trailed by intrigues and drama as the  confirmation of Rotimi Ameachi as a minister of the federal Republic of Nigeria sparked hot debate in the senate.
As speculated by analysts, Amaechi’s confirmation as minister, unlike others had been predicted wouldn’t be an easy ride.
Amaechi’s confirmation became controversial as hot argument ensued between PDP senators and APC senators during the confirmation exercise.
PDP senators led by the minority leader, Godswill Akpabio of the Peoples Democratic Party argued that the former governor of Rivers state should not be confirmed until all allegations bothering on corruption leveled against him are cleared.
Senator Abiodun Olujimi of the same party (Ekiti South) also argued that there is a moral burden on the house which makes it imperative for it to ensure things are done rightly.
Olujimi added that the senate should allow the court to absolve Amaechi from any corrupt allegation before he can be confirmed.
In the same vein, Senator Sam Anyanwu making reference to the report of the Committee on Ethics maintained that the Senate has no right to recommend confirmation for the former rivers state governor.
Senator Omoworare said the Committee on Ethics and Privileges is the most important Committee of the House, contrary to the positions of the APC senators.
Drawing inference from the Senate Standing Rules, he emphasised that, the Senate cannot decide on the matter since the Petition is in court.
Senator Sekibo commented on the Petition against Amaechi stating that it is an allegation. He said that Nigerians are watching and warned that the Senate shouldn’t encourage corruption.
After minutes of rowdy debate, the PDP senators led by the minority leader decided to stage a walk in order to register their indifference.
A motion was however moved that the report of the house Committee on Ethics and Privileges be rejected.
After the APC senators unanimously agreed to the motion, the senate president ruled out the recommendation of the report of the committee.
Like a camel passing through the eye of needle, Rotimi Amaechi was eventually confirmed as a minister of the Federal Republic.
Others nominees confirmed include Adebayo Shittu, Khadija Abba Ibrahim, Heineken Lokpobiri, Claudius Omoleye, Baba Shehuri Mustapha, Ocholi James, Adewole Isaac Folorunsho, Bawa Bwari, Geoffrey Onyeama, Zainab Ahmed, Dan Ali, Usani Uhuru, Okechukwu Enelamah, Anthony Anwuka Gozie, Mohammed Musa Bello, Adamu Adamu and Aisha Abubakar.
The senate, after three weeks of the screening exercise finally confirmed all 36 ministerial nominees as ministers and adjourned till Tuesday, November 3.

Dele Giwa’s Murder: Soyinka replies ex-Police DIG, Omeben

Dele-Giwa
                       Late Dele Giwa

A former London Bureau chief of Newswatch, Kayode Soyinka, who was present when Dele Giwa, the co-founder of the magazine was bombed to death in 1986, has reacted to recent claims by a retired police investigator Chris Omeben that Mr. Soyinka fled after the attack and was never questioned.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, published Monday, Chris Omeben, a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, who was in charge of investigating the murder, said Mr. Soyinka was shielded from being quizzed.
Chris Omeben
Chris Omeben

Mr. Giwa was killed through a letter bomb while having breakfast with Mr. Soyinka in Lagos.
Mr. Omeben, now 80, said Mr. Soyinka was the principal suspect in the attack, and wondered how he survived the powerful blast when he was in the same room.
He said Mr. Soyinka apparently left the scene shortly before the explosion. Mr. Omeben subtly faulted widespread accusations against the then military regime of Ibrahim Babangida, which many blamed for the killing.
Mr. Soyinka, who is now the publisher of Africa Today magazine, spoke to PREMIUM TIMES from his London base. He said he was questioned twice by the police after the incident.
He accused Mr. Omeben of deceit, and labelled him a “disgrace” to the Nigerian Police, who worked with the former military regime to cover up the crime. He said the real suspect in the murder was Halilu Akilu, a former army intelligence officer, who called up Mr. Giwa’s house repeatedly to get the description to the property on the day of the attack.
“I gave statements not once but twice to the same Nigerian Police he represents before I eventually left Nigeria. The first one was at the hospital where I was admitted – Dele’s body was next door to me. The interrogation carried out by a senior police officer whose name I cannot recall took place on the spot when the incident was still fresh. It was inside the hospital. Dele Olojede (publisher of defunct 234next newspaper) was beside me – he is alive, go and ask him,” he said.
Mr. Soyinka recalled that Halilu Akilu called Mr. Giwa’s house about three times within 24hours and spoke to Funmilayo, Dele’s wife, to know how to get to the journalist’s Ikeja home.
“On the Sunday of the bomb blast Dele had spoken to Akilu from his upstairs bedroom before coming down to have breakfast with me, to tell me that he heard Akilu had called him on Saturday and asked why. The letter bomb was delivered to the house within 45 minutes after that early morning telephone discussion between Dele and Akilu. So who should be Omeben’s ‘principal suspect’ then? Should it be me who was bombed with Dele? Or Akilu?
“Chris Omeben, who was a Deputy Inspector-General of Police, when the letter bomb blast occurred on October 19, 1986, is a complete disgrace to the Nigeria Police Force. He claimed to be an investigator of the bomb blast. Instead of protecting me, the survivor, who escaped death by a whisker, and by the very special grace of God, he is sadly and disgracefully trying to rewrite the script to make me, as he said, his ‘principal suspect’.
“His ‘principal suspect’ should be Halilu Akilu, who called Dele’s house about three times consecutively Saturday before the Sunday bombing and spoke to Funmilayo, Dele’s wife, to ask for description of and direction to Dele’s house in Ikeja.
“Omeben, said, and I quote: ‘Soyinka knew what was coming and he left the room to hide behind the wall.’ What a blatant lie? This man, who I understand is now a pastor, has no fear of God in him at all, making such bold erroneous statement like that on an issue of such sensitivity and accusing me, an innocent man – a victim and survivor of the bomb blast. He should ask God for forgiveness!
“In the interview Chris Omeben granted the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that coincide with this year’s anniversary of the bomb blast, he said that it was ‘behind the wall’ that I hid myself.  While In the interview with The Sun Newspaper in 2012, he said I ran to the toilet before the bomb exploded. You can see the inconsistency in his wild allegations.

“I am very disappointed and shocked that the Nigerian media, who knew and should still know the facts of what happened on that day gave Omeben powerful platform in mainstream media outlets in Nigerian to voice out this falsehood – and without calling me (a member of the Nigerian media family) to at least hear my own story.
“As a veteran journalist myself, I am ashamed of NAN and those other newspapers who published that story without doing the professional thing of calling me to cross check the veracity of Omeben’s claims and allegations.
“So let me (inform) let Omeben know again – if he does not know already, and so that he does not keep repeating these erroneous allegations again when the anniversary comes up again next year – that Dele and I were the only two people in the study when Dele’s son Billy delivered the letter bomb to his father. It is very important here to remember that some unidentified people, who gave it to the security man at the gate, delivered the parcel bomb to Dele’s house".
“The security man, while coming inside the compound with the parcel saw Billy (Dele’s son) on the way and gave it to him. When Billy came to the study and delivered the parcel to his father, Dele looked at it and handed it over to me. I looked at it and was able to vividly see the inscription on the padded envelope and handed it back to him. He received it back from me, moved his recycling chair back slightly to face the window on his left, he held the envelope with both hands, and tried to tear it through the top left-hand corner. He had not really opened it up, if he did it was only very slightly. And boom!! The bomb exploded!"
“A big ball of fire occurred. It was a very powerful bomb explosion! The side of the envelope facing the iron-barred window blew up that window. The side facing Dele exploded on his chest and stomach. And the force that came out from the bottom of the envelope blew up his upper legs and badly affected lower part of his body. He did not die immediately. He died in the hospital.
“Now, you see the vivid description I have just given you – 29 years after the gory incident. If I ran into the toilet or hid myself behind the wall before the bomb exploded like Mr Omeben will like the world, and particularly Nigerians, to believe, and as he is trying hard, very hard, to label me as the suspect, how would I have been able to know all this, and give this graphic description".
“That partly was what the Oputa Panel missed when it investigated this matter because they did not see it necessary at that time to invite me to give evidence and I was not invited".
"So, Mr Omeben should get it now that I did not – and I repeat I did not – run away to toilet or hid behind a wall. I sat on my own chair right in front of Dele. Only the strong mahogany L-shaped desk on which we were eating our breakfast divided us. So I was literally inches away from him. The huge desk must have mobbed the force of the blast that would have done the damage on me up".
“But the force was so powerful and so powerful enough to still lift me off my chair. The chair itself collapsed. I was thrown on the floor by the exit door. I was momentarily unconscious. But regained consciousness, flung my spectacles off my face, and staggered out of the room. Yes, I received no cut on my body, but my nightgown was spattered with blood – Dele’s blood – and I had burns on my forehead. And I smelt of burns".
“I thank God for sparing my life. I could have been killed on that day. My survival was a Biblical miracle. I told you that I held the letter bomb myself! What of if I was the one that opened it? And I could easily have opened it myself. But I gave it back to Dele. That’s why I believe my survival was the work of God. My own time was not up yet".
“What other allegation did Omeben level against me? He said, ‘Up till today Soyinka never appeared before the police’. Again, how can he be that ignorant? This is a blatant lie. And as a senior police officer, especially one who claims to be investigating this important incident, he should have known that I gave statements not once but twice to the same Nigerian Police he represents before I eventually left Nigeria. The first one was at the hospital where I was admitted – Dele’s body was next door to me. That interrogation by a senior police officer whose name I cannot recall took place on the spot when the incident was still fresh. It was inside the hospital. Dele Olojede was beside me – he is alive, go and ask him’.
“Dele Olojede will recall that as questions were asked I could not hear anything. My both ears were solidly blocked. That was a serious effect of the blast. Then it was confirmed there at the hospital by the ear specialists that my ears were perforated. And this was also confirmed when I got back to the UK after the incident. For about five years after the bomb blast I had to endure continuous noise, humming, nonstop in my both ears. It was very irritating, but there was nothing I could do about it until it improved over the years and stopped’
“And even up till today, 29 years after, I still carry the effect of the bomb blast in my ears because I can hear better on the right ear while my left ear, which was nearer to the blast is still weak. But who am I to complain about not hearing well, when it could have been worse and I could have lost everything completely, including my life".
“The second statement I made when the police requested to see me again. It was made at the premises of Newswatch in Oregun Road in Lagos in the presence of the eminent lawyer Chief Gani Fawehinmi. I don’t know why Omeben did not know about this and he is accusing me wrongly. The statement I made, and the ones made by Funmilayo (Dele’s wife) and Billy, I believe, is now in public domain. Chief Gani Fawehinmi must have published them in the series of books he published on this subject before he died".
“So I don’t understand why Omeben should tell Nigerians such blatant lies. That is wickedness. He does not fear God at all. Thank God I am alive and I can respond to him. Can you imagine if I had died with Dele, Omeben and cohorts would have succeeded in putting cotton wool on the faces of Nigerians and sold a different story completely to them to exonerate those who did it.
“He said again ‘I have enough evidence to quiz Soyinka now’. Well, Nigerians should help me beg Omeben, if he truly has those ‘enough evidence’, he should do us a big favour in Nigeria by releasing them to the public so that Nigerians can truly know who bombed us, Dele and I, on that day’.
“Again, Omeben said: ‘They started to insinuate that the assassination was masterminded by Babangida, Akilu etc. They said that Akilu ought to have been investigated’. Who else could have had the expertise to assemble a letter bomb in 1986 Nigeria if not the military? He did not want to investigate Akilu who was calling Dele’s house frantically on Saturday and who was the last person Dele spoke to on telephone on that Sunday and the bomb was delivered into the house minutes after. He doesn’t want to investigate Akilu but it is convenient to want to investigate Soyinka the victim and survivor of the bomb blast. Oh, what an investigator"?
“Lastly, I did not run away from Nigeria as he also claimed. I was in Nigeria throughout the controversies. My family was in the UK when the bomb occurred. A Good Samaritan went to our home in London and handed them airline tickets to come immediately to Nigeria and join me. We were all in Nigeria throughout. My wife attended Dele’s burial with me at his village near Auchi in Edo State. My pictures with my wife beside me were spread on the pages on national newspapers the following morning after the burial – with my ears still covered with cotton wool. Mr Omeben his pretending he did not know all this and still saying ‘Soyinka ran away to London"
“I eventually left Nigeria shortly after Dele’s burial, which, if my memory services me right, was about two months after the bombing. And we did not have to leave or “ran away” through the famous “Nadeco Route”. My wife and I, with our two little children, left through the Murtala Mohammed airport in Lagos and no one stopped us from taking the British Caledonian flight to London. Members of our family, Newswatch editors and friends escorted us to the airport. It was in full glare of the public.
“I hope with these comments I have made, Nigerian people will come to know Chris Omeben for who he truly is – certainly not an investigator as he claims to be but an errand boy and mischief maker, representing the interests of his ‘Ogas at the Top’, the real culprits who sent us the letter bomb. He knows who the real suspects are. Nigerians know who the real suspects are. Certainly not me – Soyinka! He should beam his searchlight on Akilu and Togun and Babangida. May Dele Giwa’s soul continue to rest in peace,” Mr. Soyinka said.
