Controversial property developer Donald Trump is set to win the next stage of the Republican presidential primaries.
Donald Trump. US Presidential Candidate |
Voting is currently underway in the small State of New Hampshire and the flamboyant businessman is set to come first comfortably.
He’s hoping to perform better than he did in Iowa last week, where he came a close second to fellow arch-conservative, Texas senator Ted Cruz.
Democratic party members are also voting today, with self-described democratic socialist Bernie Sanders likely to pummel former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Trump has made a series of shocking and controversial statements throughout the campaign, statements which according to conventional political wisdom would completely ruin his chances of becoming President.
He’s described Mexican immigrants as rapists and murders, mocked a physically disabled newspaper reporter live on television, and called for a complete and total ban on Muslims entering the United States, including for tourism and business purposes.
Only yesterday, Trump said he would authorise the American security agencies to use torture on terrorism detainees, including techniques such as waterboarding, saying he would green light “a hell of a lot worse.”
Primaries are the first contests in the US presidential race in which States decide who becomes each party’s official candidate.
Each primary race is run by State Governments and voting is done in a secret ballot and they earn delegates for the winning candidates who then vote for them at party conventions in July in which the final candidates are formally confirmed.
After each party has chosen a candidate, the nation will vote on who becomes the next President on November 8 this year.
