A 36-years-old man from Edo state, Felix Omokhoa, has been charged with murder after he allegedly stoned his neighbour to death. His alleged victim, named locally as Richard Ikekhua, is said to have been killed over an unpaid electricity bill.
Ikekhua died on January 16, 2016 in Ukpoke-Uhiele, Ekpoma, Esan West local government area, after he was hit on his forehead with a piece of cement block.
Despite the serious charge faced by Omokhoa at Ekpoma magistrates court, presiding judge Afe Osamudiamen declined to preside over the case and ordered its duplication and dispatch to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for further action.
According to police sources, Omokhoa and Ikekhua lived together as co-tenants and got into an argument over the deceased’s refusal to pay his share of a re-connection fee.
Following his refusal, the accused, aided by other neighbours, resolved to tamper with the deceased’s connection to the telephone network.
This was said to have infuriated Ikekhua, who then reported the case to the electricity company and the local police force as the re-connection was illegal.
The electricity company subsequently disconnected the entire house while the police arrested Ikekhua.
The police let Ikekhua go and warned both men against causing any further strife.
However, when the duo returned home, another quarrel arose leading to a fight, during which the accused threw a piece of cement block at deceased’s forehead, killing him instantly.
Omokhoa been remanded in custody and is currently facing a trial date which will be set after a new judge is appointed to the case.
If found guilty of murder, he could face the death penalty.
